"Help me! Help me!" Grabbing my shirt, this was the cry of my former third grade scholar. He needed my help while playing a game because he could not read the information. He wanted to win! Sadly, there was no way to win without being able to read proficiently.
Initially, I wanted to wait to start the school, but his urgency became my urgency. I am Monette Mottenon, founder of PGF Learning Academy in Montgomery, AL. Retiring after more than 20 years as an educator, I opened our microschool to serve up to 12 scholars ranging in ages from 9 to 14. Our microschool addresses his plea and many others, who are not yet demonstrating grade level skills.
I developed a vision for our microschool because when I moved to Montgomery from Indianapolis, IN, there were no affordable educational opportunities that met my daughter’s educational and social emotional needs. Now 15 years later, I see the same gaps for scholars that we serve. Our program is unique because as a small school, we can address the academic and social gaps that other schools cannot due to their design. The curriculums we use are intentionally designed to provide interventions that help close those gaps enabling our scholars to gain confidence and feel a genuine sense of accomplishment.
